Module 5: FASD Prevention

Introduction

To prevent FASD, it is necessary to prevent alcohol use by pregnant women and to reduce pregnancy risk among women who drink. Many women are not aware of the dangers of drinking while pregnant. Some physicians still advise that occasional drinking presents no risk. However, researchers have not identified a safe amount of alcohol or a safe time to drink during pregnancy. Any alcohol use during pregnancy can harm the baby.

In some cases, pregnancies are unplanned and women who use alcohol do not realize they are pregnant. Some may drink frequently or binge drink (four or more drinks in about two hours). Reducing risky levels of drinking among all women of childbearing age can reduce the number of children born with an FASD. Providing effective family planning services to women who use alcohol may also help.
