Module 4: FASD Signs and Symptoms
Signs and Symptoms: 12-17 Years
These problems can persist into adulthood. In addition, a combination of factors puts
adolescents with an FASD at risk for rejection, isolation, incarceration, and, in worst
cases, murder, suicide, or accidental death. These factors include:
- Difficulties adjusting to hormonal changes, growth spurts, and other changes related to puberty
- Learning and behavior problems
- Impulsivity
- Inability to connect action and consequences
- Inappropriate sexual behavior
- Potential for victimization and exploitation due to being easily influenced
- Lack of danger recognition
One problem is that adolescents with an FASD can talk better than they can think. They can repeat information and sound as if they understand when they do not. Parents report that children can repeat a rule, tell what might happen if it is broken, and then break it a minute later. When they are reprimanded, they do not understand why the parent is upset.
