Myths and Facts

Despite efforts of increased surveillance, education, and prevention, much remains unknown. Myths and misconceptions still abound. Some physicians remain unaware of the Surgeon General's recommendation that pregnant women completely abstain from alcohol. Some doctors tell their patients that a drink now and then will not harm the baby. With some studies showing that just one drink a day can cause damage, this may not be the safest approach.16
